Foodborne illnesses due to Salmonella represent an important public-health concern worldwide. In the United States, a majority of Salmonella infections are associated with a small number of serotypes. Furthermore, some serotypes that are overrepresented among human disease are also associated with multi-drug resistance phenotypes.
Salmonella entericasubsp. enterica includes over 1400 serotypes. Although the full name of the cause of typhoid fever is Salmonella entericasubsp. enterica serotype Typhi, it is normally just shortened to: S.
For brevity, it is usually shortened to Salmonella Typhimurium. Most nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) illnesses in the United States are thought to be foodborne. However, transmission routes likely vary among the different serotypes. We developed a relative ranking of NTS serotypes according to the strength of their association with foodborne transmission.
Salmonella serotypes associated with poultry reproductive tissues that are of public health concern include Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Heidelberg.7,8 Among the different serotypes, Salmonella Enteritidis may be better able to achieve invasion, and as a consequence, Salmonella serotype determination using DNA-specific test results.; 72 hour turnaround time. Days earlier than traditional antibody based methods. The sequence database identifies more than 1,500 other Salmonella serotypes, including CDC's top 30 serotypes of concern. 2020-07-01 Forty-three different Salmonella serotypes were identified and regardless of the source, the top five corresponded to Typhimurium, Give, Group B (partially serotyped), Infantis and Anatum. Twelve serotypes from beef carcasses were also found in ground beef, showing their presence throughout the beef production chain.
Salmonella Enteritidis, one of the most common serotypes of Salmonella reported worldwide, often linked to eggs. If a fertile egg is contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis, it infects the new chick.
The frequency of Salmonella carriage was significantly higher for wild reptiles. * Salmonella serotypes (entericaserovars) that have similar antigenic specificity are known as monophasic (E.g. Typhi).

Among Salmonella HR serotypes, Typhi (antigenic formula O: 9,12,Vi:d:fi) presents a very low genetic heterogeneity in the natural populations. Typhi has As of 2007, there were approximately 2600 serotypes known, with nearly 1530 serotypes identified within Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica (subspecies I), the subspecies primarily responsible for infections in humans and colonization of warm‐blooded animals (Grimont and Weill 2007; Guibourdenche et al. 2010).
to develop a sustainability model for Salmonella serotyping based on current and up-and-coming methods. This white paper serves as an introduction to the sustainability model and examines currently acceptable methods for Salmonella serotyping including advantages, disadvantages and cost considerations for each. II. Overview of Salmonella Serotypes1
Serotypes (Kauffman Classification) With regards to Salmonella serotypes, the bacteria has been shown to possess three types of antigen. These include antigen H (flagella antigen), antigen O (somatic antigen) and Vi (capsular). These antigens play an important role when it comes to grouping or serotyping the organisms. Select nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica (NTS) serotypes were recently found to encode the Salmonella cytolethal distending toxin (S-CDT), an important virulence factor for serotype Typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever. Using a PCR-based assay, we determined that among 21 NTS serotypes causing the majority of food-borne salmonellosis cases in the United States, genes encoding S-CDT are these 10 serotypes were eligible for selection, and isolates included in this study were limited to 1 per animal and only 1 unique isolate from the same environmental sampling date. Salmonella Serotypes Tested Isolates included in the study included Serogroup B: Typhimu-rium (n = 10), Typhimurium var. 5- (formerly Typhimurium var Salmonella serotyping is based on the Kauffmann-White-Le Minor (KW) scheme which is a modification of the original scheme from the 1930s (6, 31, 32).
