Foodborne illnesses due to Salmonella represent an important public-health concern worldwide. In the United States, a majority of Salmonella infections are associated with a small number of serotypes. Furthermore, some serotypes that are overrepresented among human disease are also associated with multi-drug resistance phenotypes.

Salmonella entericasubsp. enterica includes over 1400 serotypes. Although the full name of the cause of typhoid fever is Salmonella entericasubsp. enterica serotype Typhi, it is normally just shortened to: S.

For brevity, it is usually shortened to Salmonella Typhimurium. Most nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) illnesses in the United States are thought to be foodborne.
